Desert Teat Concept

Our installation will communicate the primeval interaction between body, community and space, and how this is the fundamental relationship which is involved in place-making, like the Burning Man festival itself.

In the city today we do not touch. Civic spaces are over designed, sanitized and risk aware. Taboos and the hardness of surfaces distance us from a tactile experience with the world and community. We are reduced in our potential for the primordial sensuousness which once formed an essential part of social bonding.

We want to gift a space which breaks the rules of civic distance and solidity, a space which is soft, tactile and adventurous, encouraging chance encounters but also providing a soft underbelly of space to experience individual psychogeographies. We are using the concept of a forest canopy as an organizing system for inhabitable spaces informed by the feminine body, inside and out.

We want to join the fecundity of Black Rock City together in a playful and sexy space representing the fertility of the earth. Throughout human evolution, religion and cults have acted as cultural bonding, pulling people together in special circumstances, exceptional conditions and phantasmagorical sights. We suggest everyone at Burning Man has these experiences so we make a cult of each other and our connection to the great other, or udder: the underbelly of mother earth.

We want inhabitants to move and relate; clothed and naked, in a communal civic space, to worship each other, each person touching parts of the installation, distorting it with their bodies and embracing its lushness and uberous mellifluousness. The inhabitants climb the up, lie on giant netting hammocks and explore spaces created by the visceral hangings. We want people to listen to the sounds of the body and the forest, to be enchanted by the droopy lovely lacy feminine parts. We encourage unpredictability by using the movement of the wind and effect of human weight on fabric.

We want people to hang onto the drooping Earth Sucklers; ambiguous forms implying an oesophagus linked to lips kissing the ground, suckling from it, buttocks hung from a digestive tract, a pair of bouncy bosoms, or perhaps testicles. These long hangings robustly made of cargo/safety netting recreate the forest verticality and will be different colors and scales to imply different viscera. Both subtly grotesque and strangely beautiful, they pull the senses of the observer in different directions.

Amongst the sucklers are wings for shade, fluttering in the wind, reminding us of the limitations of our bodies and their link with the earth. The two types of objects simultaneously reach for the sky and worship the earth, while our bodies are in the center, encouraged into unusual positions and relationships with each other by the constantly changing nets.
